Specimen 01 · Iridescent obsidian

Obsidia is a foundry for impossible matter. Specimen 01 is a living obsidian, grown in a field of light and rendered in real time on this page. Move your cursor, and it answers.

REFRACTIVE INDEX 2.41 · HUE-SHIFT 47nm · STATE: UNSTABLE

Grown, not mined.

Every specimen begins as a seed of intent and a lattice of constraints. We do not carve. We cultivate, one photon at a time, until the material learns to hold a color that has no name.

Properties

Specimen 01

A single crystal of grown obsidian. Optically active, structurally uncertain. It refracts a spectrum that shifts with every angle you give it.

Method

How a specimen is grown

  1. 01

    Seed

A single constraint is planted: a color that cannot exist under ordinary light. Everything the specimen becomes unfolds from that one impossible instruction.

  2. 02

    Field

The seed is suspended in a directed field of light for weeks. It accretes, folds back on itself, and slowly learns to refract in ways glass was never meant to.

  3. 03

    Arrest

Growth is frozen at the moment of maximum instability, the instant before the color would collapse. What remains is a material caught mid-thought.

Open specimens

The catalog

A near-black obsidian specimen glowing crimson and ember-orange from within its facets.
02Restricted

Cindershift

A black that remembers being red. Warms by a few degrees when observed.

A ring of black iridescent glass formed around a perfectly dark hollow centre with teal edges.
03Restricted

Halovoid

Grown around an absence. Bends every ray it meets toward the hollow at its centre.

A pearlescent black specimen with rose-gold and champagne mother-of-pearl folds.
04Restricted

Nacre-9

Iridescence with a pulse. Warm to the touch, colder in memory.

Angular black crystals of volcanic glass with cold blue and silver iridescent edges.
05Restricted

Umbral Salt

Crystallised shadow. Holds its form in the dark and dissolves in direct sun.

The foundry

We are not a mine. We are a garden for the impossible, a place where matter is given a color to chase and the patience to become it.
